This one-day workshop will feature the following two courses:

A Protocol for WEEE and RoHS Compliance

As the WEEE and RoHS compliance dates approach, there is a strong need for a systematic approach to meet these challenging European Directives. To fill this need, some Dartmouth graduate students and alumni teamed with Dr. Ron Lasky to develop a WEEE/RoHS Compliance protocol. This protocol is inteneded to be a "cookbook" to help companies prepare for WEEE/RoHS. This workshop will be an overview of this protocol. It's intent will be to help companies develop a plan for WEEE/ROHS. The workshop will also present some examples to help take away the "fog" in the lack of clarity in the directives. This workshop is constantly updated and has the most accurate information from mid- 2005.

  • Best Practices in Implementing Pb-free Assembly: 2005
    1:00PM - 4:00PM
    While there are many workshops on lead free assembly, this may be the only one that focuses on the "how to" of implementing lead free at your factory. This course covers all of the issues: PWB finishes, components, alloys, and SMT processes. It also reveiws actual implementation of a lead free assembly process, performed by Motorola and HP. A significant amount of process and product reliability data are presented. This workshop is constantly updated and has the most accurate information from mid-2005.

  • The current alloy systems in use and why and how they were chosen
  • What PWB finishes are preferred in Pb-free assembly
  • What are the concerns wtih components and the status of Pb-free components in the industry
  • Best practices for setting up your stencil printing, placement, inspection, reflow and wave
  • The details of a case study established by Motorola in Plantation, FL that has been used in assembling well over 70 million cellular phones world-wide
