Position Summary The Analytical Quality Chemist position will develop and implement chemical analytical and product applications testing methods, establish quality metrics based on fitness-for-use correlations, and establish measurement system analysis for incoming chemical raw materials and outgoing products. The Chemist will also be responsible for routine IPC, as well as specific and non-routine applications testing of solder alloys, solder pastes and soldering fluxes. The successful candidate will lead the analytical development and implementation effort to ready new products for mass production, as well as quality trouble-shooting for existing products and raw materials.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities • Working closely with formulators and other laboratory personnel to develop a thorough understanding of all critical, new product and incoming raw material criteria • Working with manufacturing personnel to understand raw material impacts on existing manufacturing processes and products • Chemical analytical methods development, including GC, HPLC, IC, FTIR, titrametric and other assay and compositional methods • Interfacing with other ITW business units and the ITW-Technical Center to enable optimal analytical methods development • Interfacing with customers, marketing and production teams regarding requirements and evaluation of incoming raw materials and their impact on product attributes and performance • Determining and institutionalizing raw material and product specifications, including authoring analytical procedures, methods and work instructions, and training of laboratory analysts and technicians • Development and execution of metrology capability analyses • Working through manufacturing and purchasing in the evaluation of new raw materials and suppliers • Working on specific customer issues and solving internal manufacturing problems • Conducting routine IPC reliability testing for solder pastes, soldering fluxes and semiconductor materials • Performing routine maintenance of equipment and work area • Purchasing supplies within budget guidelines • Supporting other departments as needed • Training less experienced staff • Additional duties and tasks as assigned
Qualifications • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, with an emphasis in analytical chemistry, is required. A related technical graduate degree is highly desired. • A minimum of five (5) years in chemical analytical methods development and chemical analytical testing is required. Practical knowledge of IPC testing is preferred. • Requires demonstrated proficiency in chromatographic methods including HPLC, GC and IC. • Strong project management and leadership skills • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively interact with customers • Solid understanding of statistics and application to manufacturing processes including statistical process control (SPC), design of experiments (DOE), statistical hypothesis testing, Measurement System Analysis (MSA). • Knowledge of and demonstrated success with application of productivity enhancing tools such as Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, Value Stream Mapping preferred. • Experience working in an ISO 9001 or TS/AITF 16949 environment, ISO/IEC 17025 certified Laboratory is a plus. • Ability to read, write, and interpret work process procedures, and customer reports. • Ability to handle multiple tasks and work in a fast-paced environment • Proficient computer skills - MS Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.); JMP and/or Minitab, WinSPC • Must be a team player with excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills. • Must possess decision making skills necessary to flourish in an ambiguous environment. • Takes initiative; able to function independently and make independent decisions. • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, communication and presentation skills with experience in communicating and working with a remote team.
Travel Requirements Must be willing to travel domestically and internationally as necessary to fulfill the job responsibilities. Travel estimate for this position is estimated to be up to 10%.
