Automotive Harsh Environments and Implications for ADAS and AD Sensors

Abstract: Rapid advancement in sensor technologies afford the means for Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AD) to achieve the necessary level of operational capabilities for deployment in applications. The array of sensors employed are critical for the diversity of situations that ADAS controls and AD artificial intelligence (AI) will confront. Sensor diversity is key to complex AI real-time decisions and machine/adaptive learning. Harsh environments place significant implications on each sensor technology. Handling the variety of sensor inputs is a known challenging for AI. Democratizing sensor inputs will be a greater challenge for AI under harsh conditions. This topic will discuss the various sensor technologies, the effect of extreme environments, and possible challenges for ADAS and AD.
