RoHS: How Has it Gone Eleven Years Later

Abstract: Eleven years ago RoHS was implemented amid a high level of concern about how it would work out. This paper will attempt to answer this concern. A brief overview of the implementation of RoHS will be given, followed by discussions on: • Popular and niche lead-free alloys • New alloys • Reliability performance of alloys • “New” failure modes • Benefits of lead-free • Process implementation • Lead-free for the exemptee • Sourcing difficulties • The end of medical and control instrument exemptions • Halogen-free • Tin whiskers and tin pest • What might happen in the next 5–10 years
