SSD Quality in Enterprise Storage Application - Key Learning and E2E Approach

Abstract: The electronics industry is experiencing exponential growth, driven by enterprise solid state drive (SSD), client SSD, cloud, and consumer usage. This paper will present some of the common issues on enterprise SSDs, including issues with firmware, sub-supplier control, super capacitor design, and others. Then, we will review a comprehensive approach for management of flash-SSD supplier quality that can be leveraged for enterprise storage applications. A systematic methodology for evaluating four areas critical to SSD quality 1) Flash Quality, 2) SSD Qualification methodology, 3) Firmware Quality and 4) SSD Quality will be discussed. In this paper, key focus areas such as flash component quality, SSD Qualification structure & rigor, SSD reliability monitoring, power hold-up architecture, Firmware quality & performance verification, first time data capture, Manufacturing quality, drive health management, and others will be highlighted. With this process, suppliers are systematically benchmarked against the different areas and feedback is provided to foster end-to-end (E2E) quality improvements.
