Multi-Array PCB Traceability System

Abstract: Modern electronic manufacturing service (EMS) companies try to optimize cost by fitting multiple boards on a single panel. To maximize production capabilities and to ensure board traceability and parts traceability, each board is typically identified by either a barcode label or a lasermarked linear barcode or 2D symbol such a Data Matrix. This paper describes a system integrated into a standard SMT line at the front-end or mid-stream that allows the user to decode all symbols on a panel while the panel is in motion. The system can also be mounted easily on the transfer conveyors to scan the top and bottom side of printed circuit board (PCB) panels. This system eliminates the necessity of mechanical adjustment and the use of handheld readers, and can help reduce decode errors and time between product line changes. The system can be integrated directly into the manufacturing execution system (MES) and can provide traceability data down to the board or component level.
