Abstract: COTS component obsolescence is a two-edged sword: providing relentless improvement in embedded technology, while forcing the industry supply chain players to end-oflife (EOL) low-demand products to stay competitive in a highly demanding market. The chain reaction that starts with component EOL forces equipment suppliers and engineers to scramble for long-term support solutions in the face of counterfeits and obsolescence.

Achieving long-term sustainment requires more than current best practice logistics and engineering tactics. It requires a fundamental shift in perspective from each supplier trying to solve legacy problems in isolation, towards a supply chain working together to ensure system longevity in the face of increasing counterfeit risk.
