Abstract: Rare earths are essential materials to the electronics industry. Rare earth compounds provide the color in phosphors, the strength in magnets and the stability in ceramic capacitors. Like many other strategic materials, the supply is currently very concentrated in only one part of the world and there has not been a well-established recycling industry. This paper describes the landscape and challenges and describes the opportunity to set up a recycling infrastructure to serve regional consumers of rare earths.
