Abstract: SOME LIKE IT HOT, SEMI-CONDUCTORS DO NOT The electrical insulation property of standard FR-4 material is advantageous when it isolates components and allows connection through selectively etched traces. That works fine for low powered circuits but with electrical insulation comes thermal insulation. On high power or sensitive systems, that could lead to anything from a minor annoyance to a catastrophic failure.

Heat is a real enemy to performance and longevity. A semiconductor’s performance changes with temperature and the mean-time-between-failure decreases as temperature increases. To keep the devices working properly over the long-term, temperature must be controlled.

Key Words:

PCBs, heat dissipation, metal core boards, heat sink
