The FMEA is most effective when coupled with a manufacturing system solution (Manufacturing Execution System or Manufacturing Operations System (MES/MOM)). Effective use of data collection, data aggregation and intelligent information from such a manufacturing system would lead to increased reliability of process and product data, providing factual data to feed the FMEA. Without a comprehensive system supporting FMEA, teams may focus on incorrect failure modes, missing significant opportunities to improve failure modes that may be the primary source of issues and problems.
Another area a comprehensive manufacturing solution can assist the FMEA is to ensure adherence to documented procedures and people are working within the process, reducing a significant source of variation in the process. Quality management teams globally are leveraging manufacturing systems to not only enable, but also enhance both Design FMEA (DFMEA) and Process FEMA (PFMEA). How can a Manufacturing System Solution integrate into a Process FMEA or Design FMEA? How can your factory bring variation in processes under control and bring efficiencies to further control and reduce costs? Answering those questions will be the focus of this paper.
