Illumination Grade LEDs Technology Overview And Application To PCB Manufacturing

Abstract: Over the past 15 years, LEDs have evolved to a point where they now outperform most conventional light sources when it comes to efficiency and quality of light. This has led to a revolution the lighting industry has not seen since Thomas Edison invented the first light bulb. This revolution also shakes up the upstream supply chain and electronic circuit manufacturing starts playing an important role in this industry, as all illumination grade LEDs are surface mount electronic components. However, LEDs have some special characteristics. Primarily as they are optical components and maximum light extraction, proper heat dissipation and reliability are key for the integrity of this new market, sometimes unconventional circuit board design and manufacturing techniques are required. This paper first of all covers some of the intricacies of LED technology and their application in luminaires. We then cover some guidelines on proper circuit board design. Finally, circuit board assembly of illumination grade LEDs and high power LEDs is discussed, including some of the dos and don’ts.
