EVALUATION OF LEAD FREE SURFACE FINISHES

Abstract: Up until the writing of this paper, 99% of the HASL equipment in Asia is catering only for the VERTICAL process. This is mainly due to the huge investment that is required to setup an in-line horizontal HASL process and the resources to maintain it. Even among our preferred PCB fabricators, although they are equipped with either a vertical or horizontal machine, they are all still running with Sn37Pb alloy. According to our fabricators, some require a projected order volume of 100K to support lead free HASL while others do not advocate Pb-free HASL at all. In this study, eight different types of surface finishes were assessed in terms of surface flatness, roughness, coating thickness and a typical lead free HASL process profile.
