Abstract: Audits come in two forms: government-to-business and business-to-business (B2B). Government audits are about specific products meeting specific legislation. Business-to-business audits are much broader in scope. In either case, when auditors ask a company about their product environmental compliance program, responses such as, “We’re working on it.” or “What are you looking for specifically?” are typical. When asked if they are prepared for an audit, most companies are unsure, or over confident.

With lack of government enforcement publicity, companies are at a loss for where to start in preparing for an audit. On B2B audits, it is unlikely a customer or supplier would allow for publication of the outcome of an internal audit. By utilizing and reviewing best practices and lessons learned, a pro-active approach to product eco-compliance is possible. As such, preparing for an audit is part of that process and overall program.

Key words: Audit, eco-compliance, environmental compliance, product compliance, RoHS, REACH.
