Abstract: The Electric Light ranks alongside the wheel, the printing press and the computer as one of the most significant inventions in human history. However, the light bulb has remained relatively unchanged since Thomas Edison invented the first incandescent lamp in 1879. All this is about to change at the flick of a switch.

Renewed interest in energy conservation, reduction in green house gas emissions and a call for energy independence is putting pressure on older energy inefficient products, chief among these is the incandescent light bulb. The old familiar bulb we all grew up with is being banned around the world in favor of a more efficient technology known as Solid State Lighting or SSL for short.

SSL is based on LED technology and is poised for a huge explosion in demand. This paper is geared to explain : The SSL Market, the forces driving the growth and what EMS companies can expect and do to be equipped to participate in this emerging market space.

Key words: Solid State Lighting, LED lighting, DOE, retrofit lighting, net zero building
