HOW IT CAN ENABLE ENERGY OPTIMIZATION: A CASE STUDY ON TEXTILE FACTORIES

Abstract: This paper presents a case study that shows how state-of-the-art IT solutions can significantly reduce energy consumption and operative costs of an industrial process with a negligible investment. We analyzed the processes of textile factories and found out that the process responsible for the largest energy consumption is the drying of cloth rolls. We designed an IT system based on sensors and automatic controllers enabled by software optimization algorithms, and implemented it in an Italian SME. Our solution led to a reduction of 10% of the energy bill (electricity and gas).
