Abstract: Reliable sealing of the cover tape is the most important and perhaps least understood aspect of the tape and reel packaging process. Many tape and reel packagers have been sealing heat activated cover tapes since the inception of packaging components in tape and reel, yet the understanding of the basic sealing process variables and how they interact’ with differing carrier tape base materials is not widely understood. The recent surge in usage of pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) cover tapes requires a different knowledge base and process understanding from heat activated adhesive (HAA) cover tapes. This paper will present the basic fundamentals for sealing both heat activated and pressure sensitive cover tapes. The differences between these two cover tape technologies will be explained and highlighted. Before discussing cover tapes, however, it is important to have a brief background of carrier tape materials.
