Abstract: The challenge of NAND flash based solid-state drives (SSD) to the magnetic media based hard disk drives (HDD) is poised to become a reality, albeit a very slow one. There are many factors that started to reduce the technical barriers in SSD performance and reliability concerns, notably the advancement in the NAND flash capacity and the improved design of the SSD controller units. Here, the SLC and MLC NAND flash technology and SSD assembly are reviewed and the performance characteristics of some newer generation SSDs are presented. Market penetration of the SSD in the foreseeable future is still low because the cost per GigaByte (GByte) remained high relative to that of the HDD.
