Abstract: Most original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) purchase printed wiring boards (PWBs) in lieu of manufacturing them in a captive shop. However, as advancements in design lead to higher density and increased functionality, PWB suppliers often struggle to keep pace. The impact felt by OEMs could mean delays in delivery that prevent scheduled introduction of new products. Quality, cost, and delivery are issues of significant concern to every OEM. By evaluating current and prospective PWB suppliers’ capabilities, OEMs can help to ensure that their products reach the marketplace on time, at the right price, and with the highest possible quality.

Process capability panels are being used to collect quantitative capability and quality data from PWB suppliers. The data shows a wide range in performance among the suppliers, and emphasizes the strengths and weaknesses of each. The data is used to ensure that OEMs select board suppliers with the capability to manufacture their designs at the required level of quality.
