Abstract: As electronic devices become ever smaller, their performance in many different types of operating environments has led many device packaging companies into the world of conformal coatings. These coatings provide a thin dielectric and protective moisture barrier to the device leads, components and other conductors on the circuit board. Adhesion of such coatings to the intended substrate surfaces is one of the most important features of a coating’s effectiveness. Without adequate adhesion, moisture molecules can pass through the coating and deposit on the substrate, causing a variety of potential problems such as blister formation, corrosion and electrical failure. To address growing adhesion issues of the coatings for medical electronics and other devices, a new adhesion solution has been developed and evaluated. This paper describes the effectiveness of the new adhesion solutions on various difficult substrates.
