BENCHMARK ELECTRONIC’S FRAMEWORK FOR ROHS IMPLEMENTATION

Abstract: During the past four years, Benchmark Electronics Inc. has established and deployed RoHS manufacturing processes within its divisions. The proposed paper “Benchmark Electronics framework for RoHS implementation” will detail a summary of the work completed, in a three phase approach. Phase 1 includes the design of experiments completed to qualify process chemistries along with defining the RoHS compliant manufacturing process. Phase 2 encompasses a defined process to transition a lead free product into the manufacturing process. The goal is to demonstrate that the lead-free metrics meet or exceed the tin lead metrics. Topics include case study findings of the lead-free transition including “hybrid” assemblies. Phase 3 details the full deployment of RoHS manufacturing including lead-free process controls, visual management and XRF verification. Topics include material integrity and opportunities for cross contamination with the tin/lead assembly process.
