WiFi, WiMax, WiMe?

Abstract: The last decade has seen an explosion in activity related to wireless communications, and therefore in the development of standards. This explosion has been triggered largely by successful commercialization and widespread market adoption of two products which successfully “cut a wire” to important tools: the telephone and the laptop computer. Entrepreneurs looking for other cords to cut in the hopes of owning “the next big thing” have produced a cornucopia of technologies and standards, which keep wireless specialists struggling to stay abreast and non-specialists bewildered. It is my hope to put some of these efforts into perspective that will prove useful for understanding the current directions and possible future trajectories of standards-based wireless technologies.
