Abstract: The combined progress in our understanding of cell and molecular biology, novel biocompatible coatings, as well as electronic device miniaturization is now being combined into next generation mammalian medical devices, e.g., microfluidics, drug-coated generation arterial stents, and other structural and functional implants. With the growth and gradual aging of our population and the cost of medical care, the role of electronics in medical devices will become a more common approach to diagnose, monitor, and treat multiple patients in real-time and through wireless and internet methods. This paper presents an overview of these applications as well as the technological issues and challenges for next generation electronic medical devices.
