INFORMATION SYSTEM DESIGN PROCESSES FOR ELECTRONICS MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS

Abstract: While designing information systems for the manufacturing domain, the hierarchy of the decisions made at different junctures needs to be explicitly considered. Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) helps in enterprise-level and inter-enterprise planning and in decision-making at the strategic, tactical and operational levels. It uses constraints such as availability, capacities, inventories, and cost to produce an ‘optimized’ plan.

This paper provides an overview of the hierarchical decisions that must be addressed in the manufacturing domain. The main design and implementation issues associated with the information systems in the domain of electronics manufacturing are discussed. The unique characteristics of high-end electronics manufacturing such as a rich product mix, the need for constant changes in process settings, and process flows impose many design constraints. This paper focuses on these challenges and presents a system to resolve the same. The system, known as the Tool Load Planner (TLP), can be integrated with the existing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system for planning the load at various workcenters.
