THE INTERACTION OF PWB SURFACE FINISHES AND 0201 COMPONENTS

Abstract: A test vehicle was designed, fabricated, and assembled to investigate the interaction of 0201 components and printed wiring board surface finish. Manufacturability aspects investigated included printed wiring board pad geometry, solder paste stencil printing processes, component placement processes, and solder reflow processes. After assembly the test vehicles were inspected for soldering defects such as tombstoning and placement defects such as bridging.

Statistical analysis of the test results revealed an equal distribution of the defects across the investigation surface finishes except for missing component defects which were predominately found on the immersion tin finish. The investigation results demonstrate that assembly processes incorporating 0201 components are very robust and produced high yields within the parameters investigated
