Abstract: The reliability of electronic assemblies & systems is being highly emphasized over the last few decades. Customers not only expect, but demand higher reliability from new products regardless of complexity. Reliability prediction methods have been used early in the product lifecycle to provide reliability predictions about a new product. These predictions, which are usually based on MIL-HDBK-217 or subsequent commercial models or national standards, can be used to demonstrate compliance to customer reliability specifications or demonstrate a competitive advantage.

However, several caveats of reliability predictions have undermined their credibility and therefore their value. This paper will identify the caveats of electronic product reliability predictions and suggest methods of usage and interpretation that will augment their credibility and increase their value. Several examples will be used to demonstrate the concepts.
