Abstract: Selective soldering is emerging as a necessary technology for companies that produce circuit boards with a mix of SMT and through-hold components. Historically, soldering through-hole components has been limited to hand soldering, palletized and masked wave soldering, along with multiple and single tube nozzles for dedicated selective soldering equipment. These methods, naturally, offer benefits that have been utilized for many years. However, each method has limitations that can be overcome by using current selective soldering methods and techniques.

This paper will discuss and illustrate recent trends and established technologies relating to flowing wave type selective soldering. This translates into improved quality and process control, repeatability, and elimination of rework.
