Abstract: The electronics economy leaves everyone doing more with less, potentially yielding negative results. With streamlining operations and workforce reductions, alternative methods for improving productivity and profitability are in high demand. Surface mount manufacturing equipment performance can be optimized through regular machine capability measurements. As machines are evaluated against their operating specification limits, statistical analysis allows the investigation of complete machine function.

Only with specially designed tests and highly accurate glass plates along with a suitable measurement system, can a system be diagnosed and accurately adjusted for optimum performance. Increased productivity has a profound impact on manufacturing profitability. With such a penetrating and positive effect on profitability, only now can electronics assemblers begin to realize the tangible benefits of regular machine capability measurements.

Statistical evaluation of process characteristics or measurable attributes can allow the accurate adjustment of a machine or process. History of statistical process control in manufacturing has proven this repeatedly.
