Abstract: The premise of this paper is that the rate at which environmental demands are being placed on industry may be straining the ability of some sectors of industry, particularly SMEs*, to respond. This is true of some SMEs within the Irish manufacturing sector. A major factor would encourage environmental conformance, in that it bestows a potential competitive edge, whilst at the same time the legal penalties for non-conformance are becoming quite severe.

This work has attempted to identify the degree of conformance to current environmental legislation of Irish SMEs. In addition, attempts to ascertain the degree of awareness of developments in legislation and industry best practices. It also addresses the assistance available to Irish and other European SMEs in their attempts at environmental compliance.

Finally a self-assessment/help package for SMES has been developed. This is in computer executable format and is intended to assist a company in bench marking itself both against current legislation as well as best practises amongst other SMEs
