Abstract: Implementation of automatic optical inspection in printed circuit board assembly processes has been incremental and fragmented in many cases, leading to underutilization of the technology. A model is described based upon the installation of an integrated AOI solution encompassing bench top and in line systems at different manufacturing stages, and includes off line programming, inspection, defect verification, data integration, and line balancing and control.

Evaluation of optimal location(s) of AOI is also critical, and correlation of results in operations where it is used at multiple stages can assist significantly in process optimization. Flexibility and scaling are also issues in environments where there is rapid change in requirements.

Key words: automatic optical inspection, AOI, surface mount technology, quality control.
