Abstract: This paper presents the business case for how manufacturers can use DFx tools that use DPMO data to improve quality and reduce costs. DPMO data can be used to accurately predict the fault spectrum on future products, quote new business, plan more effective test strategies, predict yields, and estimate shipped quality levels. Manufacturers can use DFx tools resolve difficulties during the planning phase to ensure more flawless execution and lower costs during manufacture.

Effective DFx methods facilitate business relationships between OEMs and EMS providers by quantifying and prioritizing the actions necessary to achieve higher customer satisfaction. EMS providers can sell DFx services that deliver reduced cost of PCB assembly to their OEM customers; in this way, DFx services can become a profit center that provides differentiation from competitors. Real examples of DFx tools in use at an EMS provider are shown.
