Abstract: The trend toward orders of magnitude higher production quantities, coupled with mandated drastic price production, will support a revolution in fiber optic component assembly and test over the next decade. Automation equipment vendors from other product arenas, plus startups, increasingly will contend with current fiber optic automation vendors. The past couple of years, however, have been very disruptive. The broad, global economic recession has impacted the entire automated assembly equipment market. (ATS, Automation Tooling Systems, is a leader in the broad automation market; their seven-year revenue trend, Figure A, shows this impact.) (Note that fiscal years typically do not correspond to calendar years; ATS' FY ends March 31.) ATS is now partnering with Adept in selected fiber optic automation applications.
