Abstract: This paper will demonstrate how reliable data communications through a backplane at 10 Gbps can be achieved today through a combination of good design practices plus available connector and active equalization technologies. A brief description of interconnect issues and how they affect the channel is given. It will be demonstrated a well-designed channel can be readily corrected by simple, robust active equalization techniques at the receiving end. Experimental results are given to illustrate the channel issues and how they impact overall performance. The results illustrate that 10 Gbps performance is consistently achievable over FR-4 backplane traces.
