Abstract: Direct part marking with Data Matrix technology offers significant opportunities to improve product quality and reduce operating and warranty costs in electronic circuit board assembly and test operations. This paper will describe the technology of direct part marking circuit boards and components, its application in managing logistics and quality in assembly and test processes and the results of direct marked board integrity testing.

Direct part marking with Data Matrix offers permanent, extremely high quality, compact symbols which can be reliably read in any orientation with relatively low contrast and lighting. These very compact symbols provide the ability to mark virtually every circuit board and many expensive components and subassemblies prior to assembly operations; thereby offering previously unattainable levels of cost-effective, perpetual traceability.

Increases in part marking coverage by utilizing Data Matrix marking, verifying, reading and communications solutions and the resulting improvements in the cost of logistics, process defect rates and equipment utilization will be discussed in some detail. An ROI model will be presented and some typical cost reduction examples will be illustrated. Industry standards, existing product applications and operating experiences with direct marked Data Matrix will also be reviewed.
