Abstract: Network communication traffic is expected to grow 50% annually through 2005. Local Exchange Carriers’ (LEC) Central Offices (CO) that contain the network equipment are built and use industry standard space/power requirements to house network equipment. Power and space are expensive commodities at a CO and you do not want to replace equipment often due to the price of the network transport equipment. You want to put the most bandwidth and functionality in limited space. Consequently, the semiconductors used to build the network communication equipment must consume as little space and power as possible, while processing as much traffic as possible.
