Abstract: Data traffic has overtaken voice traffic in terms of SONET/SDH systems bandwidth utilization. Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) is deployed, 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) products are introduced, Fibre Channel is already in service at 1.0625 Gbps and 2.125 Gbps, and 10 Gigabit Fibre Channel (10GFC) standards are in development. Data traffic volume is increasing and traffic rates are also increasing. High-speed services across wide areas are rapidly growing as e-commerce data exchange proliferates, companies become increasingly geographically diverse, and direct access to offsite data storage becomes a requirement. Consequently, not only are new high-speed data services being deployed, they are being extended across Wide Area Networks (WANs), Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs), and Storage Area Networks (SANs).
