Selective Soldering a Big HIT at Henkel

Lead-Free & Tin/lead Selective Soldering, Design, Quality Control & Practical Defect Solutions
Tuesday 15th October, Henkel, Hemel Hempstead
SMTA Europe organised its first workshop at the offices of Henkel in Hem and the delegates voted it 9 out of 10 for technical content and facilities.
Delegates and workshop leader, Bob Willis, were the guests of Richard Boyle for the day. Richard has often organised events at his facility for members of the SMART Group now SMTA Europe. The day started off with introductions and the information on the facility and most importantly lunch and refreshments.

Bob presented all of the topics on the day with multiple question sessions all supported by Richard. The session also included a couple of demonstrations, test solder mask surface tension which is important for fluxing and conformal coating. SMTA Europe also offer on site training sessions for groups of staff in the UK and main land Europe.

Bob took the opportunity to showcase the SMTA Interactive training courses which are available online. These now include a course dedicated to Selective Soldering created by SMTA Europe. During the day each step in the selective process was discussed along with common process problems and, most importantly, design. The key to success in any manufacturing process is the design. Component selection, PCB layout and of course surface finish and reliability were covered.
"We hope to be running more workshops in the coming months to supplement our online webinars and European Conferences," said Keith Bryant, SMTA Europe Chairman.
Outline of the workshop and topics covered:
  • Why use selective soldering
  • PCB design rules for selective soldering
  • Flux requirements for selective soldering
  • Compatibility of solder masks and lead-free solder
  • Setting up lead-free profiles, you must profile a selective process!!!
  • Solder alloy choices
  • Copper dissolution with selective
  • Flux contamination and corrosion issues
  • Automated through hole inspection
  • Soldering defects on selective – Causes and Cures
