Hutchins Grant Recipient Announced

Hutchins Grant Winner Christine Taylor Accepting AwardDuring the 2014 Annual Meeting at SMTA International, the SMTA announced that Christine Taylor, a graduate student at Georgia Institute of Technology, has been selected as the recipient of the 2014 Charles Hutchins Educational Grant. The SMTA Grant Committee selected her project entitled "Nano- and Micro-scale Strain Sensors for Measuring Stress Evolution in Microelectronic Packages." In August of 2015, Christine will receive her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering degree from Georgia Institute of Technology, where she has also previously received her Masters in Mechanical Engineering degree. Christine also earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University in 2008.

Stencil Printing 101: New Online Course Released!

SMTA recently released an affordable online course on Stencil Printing and Troubleshooting 101. The course will be useful for equipment operators and technicians who want to understand more about the overall process and who have a basic familiarity with the equipment referenced in each section. Printing is an extremely critical part of the assembly process and many defects that are created in the SMT process begin in the printing stage. Typical causes of these defects are poor alignment between the substrate and the stencil, incorrect paste chemistry, or inconsistent/excess/insufficient solder paste deposits. Understanding correct printing optimization is crucial to reducing defects and increasing yield.
