Welcome to SMTA
The Surface Mount Technology Association (SMTA) is an international network of professionals who build skills, share practical experience and develop solutions in electronic assembly technologies, including microsystems, emerging technologies, and related business operations.
Hear more from members about the value of joining SMTA...
We are sad to hear of the passing of industry veteran Dieter Bergman. SMTA sends our sympathy to Dieter's family and to all of our IPC colleagues. He will be greatly missed.
FREE NPL Reports on High Temperature Electronics Materials
The latest reports from NPL on high temperature materials will be made available during the "Power and High Temperature Experience" at SMTA International and will also be provided to attendees of a pre-event webinar on the topic. The two reports "High Temperature Solder Replacement to Meet RoHS" & "Practical Guide to Soldering PCBs with High Temperature Solder Alloys" cover some of the work undertaken by the engineers at NPL. National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the national measurement standards laboratory for the United Kingdom, based at Bushy Park in Teddington, London, England. It is the largest applied physics organisation in the UK and has been a supporter of the SMTA for many years. The Electronics Interconnection Group have been conducting research and practical assessment of products and material for the industry for many years with well over 100 reports freely available to download.
Medical Symposium Preliminary Program AnnouncedSeptember 18-19, 2014 | Portland, OR
iNEMI, MEPTEC, and SMTA have joined forces to host this international conference, focusing on advances in electronic technologies and advanced manufacturing, specifically targeting medical and bioscience applications. Presentations are divided into three tracks: Components and Designs for Higher Density Functionalities, Solutions for Best-in-Class Assembly and Volume Manufacturing, and Next Generation Microelectronics for Changing Healthcare Markets. Register by August 15 and save $100.
Stencil Printing 101: New Online Course Released!
SMTA recently released an affordable online course on Stencil Printing and Troubleshooting 101. The course will be useful for equipment operators and technicians who want to understand more about the overall process and who have a basic familiarity with the equipment referenced in each section. Printing is an extremely critical part of the assembly process and many defects that are created in the SMT process begin in the printing stage. Typical causes of these defects are poor alignment between the substrate and the stencil, incorrect paste chemistry, or inconsistent/excess/insufficient solder paste deposits. Understanding correct printing optimization is crucial to reducing defects and increasing yield.
Recently Released: Handbook of Electronic Assembly and A Guide to SMTA Certification
Originally conceived as a supplement to the SMTA Certification Program, this book is a must-have reference manual for all process engineers working in the electronics industry as well as anyone just entering the industry. The book provides an in-depth understanding of the entire electronic assembly process. Chapter topics include soldering and materials, printed wiring boards, components, paste-print stencil, component placement, assembly line design and optimization, solder reflow, wave soldering, dispensing, and inspection and test.
