ABSTRACT

This presentation provides an introduction to Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI) by explaining the vocabulary terms, exploring the reasons for EMI shielding, suggesting techniques for minimizing EMI, and providing some design considerations.  It also illustrates some EMI shielding applications, including PCB shielding and gasket materials.

Our guest speaker, Mr. Jochen Lipp, CEO of IBL-Lottechnik GmbH, gave a stimulating presentation titled "High Quality Vapor Phase Reflow Soldering - The Advanced Soft Solder Technology."

ABSTRACT

The presentation explained the excellent soldering results obtained from vapor phase reflow technology due to better heat transfer, lower termperature differentials, and an oxygen-free atmosphere.  It described how this technology overcomes common issues of tombstoning, voiding, delamination, and popcorning.  Applications range from complex boards, ball grid arrays, stacked packages, and ceramic packages, including a production mix of PbSn and Pb-free solders.

A joint luncheon meeting with the local IMAPS chapter was held on Thursday, February 4, with an excellent Electronics industry forecast presentation called "Analyzing the Recovery" by Bill McClean, President of IC Insights.  It was an outstanding success.  More than 30 people attended and Prototron Circuits exhibited.  We may make this an annual event.

ANALYZING THE RECOVERY

The IC industry is poised for an impressive rebound and solid growth in 2010!  Unit demand remains strong, 300 mm fabs are running near capacity, and IC average selling prices are headed higher.  For the first time in a long while, companies in the IC industry have reason to be upbeat about the coming year.

Global recessions should be thought of as periods of "pent-up" demand for electronic systems.  Although these severe downturns always cause a temporary push-out of electronic system purchases, they do not destroy the underlying desire to purchase.

Global recessions typically set the stage for a booming IC market.  Over the past 30 years, the world has endured four global recessions, and after every one of these recessions, a booming IC market immediately followed!  Moreover, the strong IC market that followed the global recession has always lasted at least two years.

Bill McClean, President of IC Insights, examined the relationship between worldwide GDP, electronic system sales, the IC market, and IC unit volume shipments and presented the 2010 forecast for each of these segments.
