2012 SMTA Members of Distinction Awards

SMTA has recognized exceptional individual and corporate members for their immeasurable contributions to the Association since 1994. Please join us in showing our appreciation for SMTA members dedicated to preserving the traditions of the association and maintaining high standards of professionalism in the industry. We invite you to take a few minutes to nominate individual or corporate members for one of the prestigious SMTA awards below to be presented at the Annual Meeting during the 2012 SMTA International Conference in Orlando, Florida.

SMTA+ Corporate Award
Presented to an SMTA corporate member company that has shown exceptional support of the SMTA. This award is based on the multitude of ways that a company has contributed to the SMTA. Examples include: attending and participating in technical conferences and events, supporting chapter or national leaders, encouraging and supporting individual members, etc. This award is not based on a company's product or a service.

Member of Technical Distinction Award
Presented to a member who has made outstanding and continuing contributions to the SMTA over a period of at least three years. Minimum criteria for this award includes serving on a technical committee, presenting technical papers or conducting a course(s) at local, regional or national conferences.

Founder's Award
Presented to a member who has made exceptional contributions to the industry, and provided ongoing support and service to the SMTA. The recipient must be an SMTA member for a minimum of three years prior to the award.
Excellence in Leadership Award
Presented to a member who has shown exceptional dedication to the SMTA, serving as a leader at the national, international, and/or chapter level. The individual’s involvement has enhanced the association, expanded programs, or made a significant impact to achieve the SMTA mission. The recipient must be an SMTA member for a minimum of three years prior to the award.

International Leadership Award
Presented to a member who has provided outstanding support and leadership to the SMTA's international members, chapters, or educational programs. This person's efforts have resulted in the further development and maturation of the SMTA network, chapters, and programs outside of the USA. The recipient must be a member for a minimum of two years prior to the award.

During the 2011 Annual Meeting at SMTA International, the association honored members who have shown exceptional service to the association and the industry.

SMTA Founder's Award Winner at SMTAIThe FOUNDER'S AWARD honoring members who have made exceptional contributions to the industry as well as support and service to the SMTA, was presented to Dr. Laura Turbini, Chemistry Lab Manager and Principal Scientist at Research in Motion. (right). Laura Turbini, Ph.D., has been a member of the SMTA since 1990, and has shared her expertise in a variety of ways to ensure that the Association achieves our mission. Dr. Turbini served on the SMTA Board of Directors for six years, chaired the Hutchins Grant Committee since 1998 and has also served on the Nominating, Journal, and Technical Committees. She initiated the first ICSR Conference in 2007 and has served as the chairperson ever since. Laura has chaired or spoken at numerous SMTA conferences for many years.

SMTA Technical Distinction Award Winner at SMTAIThe MEMBER OF TECHNICAL DISTINCTION AWARD recognizes individuals who have made significant and continuing contributions to the SMTA. This year our Awards Committee selected Dr. Srinivas Chada, Power-One Renewable Energy Solutions, LLC, as the recipient of this prestigious award. Dr. Srinivas Chada has been a long time SMTA member and has contributed significantly with his broad knowledge of Lead-free solders, electronic interconnects, reliability, out-sourcing, vendor qualification, six-sigma black belt, management, business development, product engineering, marketing and supplier quality. As chair of the SMTA Journal review committee he has spent countless hours reviewing papers and with input from the committee he selects some very excellent papers for the journal on very relevant topics and issues for the industry. During the industry transition to lead-free, Dr. Chada has led many technical discussion on solderabity and reliability issues. He has conducted evaluations, presented papers at SMTA conferences and chaired sessions and technical forums. He serves on the SMTAI Technical Committee. He has also contributed and participated in standardization meetings at IPC.

SMTA Leadership Award Winner at SMTAI The EXCELLENCE IN LEADERSHIP AWARD honors SMTA members who stand out as strong leaders in the Association. The 2011 recipient of this award is Eileen Hibbler of Stanley Supply & Services. Eileen Hibbler has been an invaluable contributor to SMTA. A standard bearer of organizational leadership, she has been the point person in establishing the Space Coast Chapter and making it one of the most successful in our association. Space Coast was recognized as chapter of the year in 2009. As president of the chapter she has led by example, devoting countless hours in organizing monthly local chapter meetings and by promoting our national events. This year she was largely responsible for selling 50 table top supplier exhibits, making this another in a series of successful Space Coast annual Expo and Tech Forums. Through her leadership Eileen has truly manifested our mission statement. SMTA Headquarters has recognized for many years that Eileen is the type of person we can always count on to get the job done. Her enthusiasm knows no limits. She is one of the SMTA's very best "cheerleaders". She is high energy, has great ideas and follow through. We are proud to honor Eileen as the recipient of the 2011 Excellence in Leadership award.

SMTA International Leadership Award Winner at SMTAI The EXCELLENCE IN INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD was presented to Bill Barthel, Plexus Corporation, for his continuous commitment to SMTA with regard to our international focus. Bill recognized a need for a local chapter and put his "heart and soul" into the development of SMTA's presence in Malaysia. He made numerous trips, recruited a leadership team, trained them, participated in many, many telecons with leaders in Penang, and got them off to a good start. His vision really came to fruition when the Penang Chapter was recognized as our International Chapter of the year a few years ago. He continues to offer advice to the leadership team in Penang and is one of their strongest advocates. Bill's technical experience in the industry, combined with his belief in strong international development, has helped the SMTA improve and increase their image and value in the international SMT community to the point it is at today. His international influence and commitment will benefit the SMTA for many years to come.

SMTA+ Corporate Partnership Award Winner The SMTA+ CORPORATE PARTNERSHIP AWARD was presented to Research in Motion. Research in Motion joined the SMTA as a Corporate Member in 1999 and has been continuously active in their commitment to SMTA. The list of their service to our organization is long; examples of their endless support include the following:
  • Currently 52 active members
  • Sponsorships -One of the sponsors of the 25th Anniversary celebration in 2009
  • SMTA International -Presented papers in 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010 -Supported involvement of chairs and co-chairs 1998-2011
  • International Conference on Soldering and Reliability (ICSR) -Worked closely with SMTA to organize & deliver ICSR in 2007, 2008, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011
  • SMTA Board of Directors -Supported involvement of Dr. Laura Turbini on Planning Committee for six years
  • Local Chapter – Toronto. Dr. Bev Christian has served in various capacities as a chapter officer since 2000
  • Student Initiatives -Offer and support internships for college students working towards a degree in an industry related position. RIM technicians presented a hands-on workshop for students at University of Waterloo in spring 2011 that was so successful it will be scheduled as an annual event.


  • SMTA Chapter Award Winner at SMTAI The CHAPTER OF THE YEAR AWARD recognizes an SMTA chapter that has shown exemplary commitment to our objective... "Sharing the Knowledge". The overall rating of each chapter is measured in the following areas: membership growth, regular meeting scheduling, timely reporting and communication, creative and informative technical programming, special projects, contributions and volunteer service on SMTA committees.

    We are proud to present our 2011 Chapter of the Year Award to the Dallas SMTA Chapter. This is the first time the Dallas Chapter has won this prestigious award. We are so very proud of the chapter's success and for their outstanding leadership team. Congratulations and thank you for "sharing the knowledge" with colleagues in our industry.
